Stern VS Bow
The big question is, "which is better?" Having both is obviously the ideal situation but if you're trying to decide on one or the other, which one wins? This should help you make that decision.
Bow Thruster Advantages:
- They move a boats bow to port or starboard with the flick of a switch.
- They are more widely known because they were first on the market.
Stern Thruster Advantages:
- They move a boats bow to port or starboard with the flick of a switch.
- Stern Thrusters cost less.
- Stern Thrusters are easier to install.
- There are no holes below the waterline with S T I Thrusters.
We offer both Stern and Bow Thrusters. The following may save you thousands of dollars.
Think about a boats pivot point for a second, and try the switches.

A boat doesn't care which end the thruster is on; why should you?
As you see, you get exactly the same reaction from the boat when using a Bow Thruster or a Stern Thruster. Maneuvering is easy and docking is a breeze.
Which Is Best?
A Bow thruster has to be in a tube/tunnel, a Stern Thruster does not. There are disadvantages to using a tube with a Stern Thrusters because of debris in the water. When used with a tube, there is a good chance that debris will be sucked into the tube and stop the prop because debris can get wedged inside the tube. This can also happen with Bow Thrusters.
With an open Stern Thruster there isn't any place for the debris to get lodged or wedged; it just gets pushed away by water turbulence when you activate your thruster. We use 11" X 11" navy "G" Bronze and Stainless Steel props on our hydraulic thrusters. And since there is no tube for debris to lodge in, floating junk is just prop washed away.
Constant winds, gusty winds, tricky cross currents, strong river currents and unforgiving close and crowded docking spaces are a worry of the past. STI Thrusters give you the control to handle these situations safely and with confidence.
STI Thrusters can be used simultaneously while operating the boats own props and shifting into forward or reverse while manuevering. Your confidence and ability to maneuver in tight spaces under normal or adverse conditions is increased dramatically with fingertip ease.
